rainbow mountain

Last Saturday we went to Rainbow Mountain with some friends and it was absolutely amazing.

The agency picked us up at 4 a.m and we drove for a bit before getting to the mountain. They take the most scenic road up the mountain, passing through small villages, alpaca husbandry, to the right snowy mountain tops and to the left small streams flowing through the tiny houses.

Once we got to the starting point of the trek we decided to take horses up instead, and I would highly recommend doing that as you are at 5000m high so breathing is a quite challenging thing to do. Once you’re on your horse you can just enjoy the breathtaking view, it takes about 30min to get to the last part - keep in mind it takes about 2hours on foot.

Once we got to the last part, you’ve got a very steep hill to walk up to get to the top of the mountain. This is about a 30 min walk as you have to stop to catch your breath quite often. But it was totally worth it because once you get up there it’s spectacular. The panoramic view you get of the different mountains: the red valley, the rainbow mountain, the snowy mountains in the distance. I was freezing cold but I could’ve stayed there for days just admiring the view.

We had been warned that it rains quite often and sometimes even snows. A friend of our hadn’t been able to go because there was too much rain the day before us. Luckily we had the most amazing weather going up and when we were walking down it started snowing. It was magical.
